In 2017 the global generation of electricity grew by 2.8% and was produced by an ever increasing variety of power plants. From coal-fired and nuclear power plants to gas turbine and combined cycle plants, solar parks, wind farms and more, they all play their part. With electricity in such high demand, these sites must guard against intruders and potential perimeter attacks. So there has to be an effective power plant security system on every site’s perimeter. Some of those perimeters are large!
The Pavagada Solar Park in India, for example, covers a geographical area of 53 km2 (13,000 acres). What is more, by the end of 2018 it will be the biggest solar power plant on earth! Of course, most power plants are smaller in scale. An example of this is the photovoltaic power plant at Lauingen in Bavaria (photo) which is just over 155 acres.
How Do You Protect Power Plants?
It is always a challenge to configure perimeter security systems for power plants because it often involves a wide variety of factors. The first of these factors is the site’s main line of defence which might be a perimeter wall or some type of high security fencing. Other factors include points of entry and access gates which also need protection. The site’s geography and local climate also have to be considered.
Essentially, you must quantify the site in great detail and understand the nature of potential threats to its security. There must be no weak point if you want to implement an effective, high security solution. So what security solutions are there to choose from?
Perimeter Intrusion Detection System
If a site has a perimeter palisade fence, which is the case with many power plants, then Flexiguard™ is the ideal perimeter detection system. Flexiguard™ was installed to protect the entire site perimeter including all points of access at Corby Power Station in the UK. It is a gas-fired, combined cycle power plant where a 350 MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) is the source of power generation.
High Security Electric Fence System
Nuclear power plants can present a different scenario because they have a premium role in a country’s infrastructure. When Advanced Perimeter Systems Limited was approached to quote for the perimeter security of BNFL nuclear reactor sites, our R&D team had recently completed the development of a unique product. It was a super-high security version of Electro-Fence™ which had just passed Government testing.
Basically we are talking about an extra high, bendable electric fence! Something that no other security manufacturer had ever developed. For more detail on this bespoke system visit our page about power plant security within our Applications section.
