Enquiries and orders for an intrinsically safe perimeter security system seem to be on the increase. Certainly that’s what our in-house database tells us! So today we shed some light on the subject of intrinsic safety and how it relates to perimeter security technology.
What exactly is Intrinsic Safety?
Intrinsic safety has been an important consideration for many years within the industrial and military sectors. We take a look at why that is and the difference between a standard perimeter security system and an intrinsically safe one.
Bascially, wherever hazardous materials are stored or wherever there might be dangerous levels of flammable gas or dust present, the risk of ignition causing an explosion is high. Sites that fall into this category include:
- Paint stores
- Firework stores
- Explosive stores (quarry and mining sites)
- Petrochemical refineries
- Ammunition stores
All modern perimeter security systems involve an electrical supply to some degree. Standard operation of any electrical equipment can generate electrical arcing (internal sparks, in connectors and switches) and these sparks can be a source of ignition. Therefore, all the above types of site have to exercise great care when electrical equipment is in proximity to their hazardous or flammable substances.
An intrinsically safe security system is one that allows safe operation of electrical equipment in hazardous areas by limiting the energy available for ignition to a much lower and safe level.
Here at Advanced Perimeter Systems we have a dedicated product: the Flexiguard™ Explosives Store Security System (sensor cable and analyser system) with can be supplied with Zener safety barriers to ensure that no more than the approved voltage or current enters the hazardous area. For those interested in the technical side of intrinsically safe security, this page about the Zener diode might be of interest.
Intrinsically Safe Security Manufacturing
As manufacturers of our own range of perimeter security products, we have taken the subject of intrinsic safety very seriously for many years. When we supply this this type of system it also comes with a detailed specification and installation guide to ensure optimum performance. You can read more here about the intrinsically safe perimeter security that we have supplied to date.
