Free standing electric fences are one of the less common forms of perimeter security. We usually install such fences on a very particular type of outdoor site. This is where the Electro-Fence™ free standing electric fence system (also referred to as stand alone electric fencing) provides a very effective, high security solution.
It tends to be the larger outdoor sites which house valuable commodities where they need a free standing electric fence. Ports and shipping terminals are a good example because of the large consignments of goods they have to store. This is demonstrated in our perimeter protection for shipping terminal case study. It was a 75 acre site with free standing electric fence. Service reservoirs and water pumping stations are other examples.
Why Install A Free Standing Electric Fence?
These large sites have an extensive perimeter where an existing wall or robust metal palisade/weldmesh fence provides protection. Very often these sites realise that such a level of perimeter protection is not enough. So they choose to shore up security within the perimeter with additional measures. The installation of an electric security fence as a free standing fence is one of the most viable ways they can opt for but there is a caviat. They can only do this if they already have a fence or wall of at least 1.8m in height around the site perimeter.
Dam With Free Standing Electric Fence
This photograph left was taken after the installation of our free standing electric fence at Kielder Dam in the UK.
There was an existing fence around the site as a whole but it was some distance from the dam itself.
As the photograph shows with the dam in shot, the electric fence protection is much closer to the water. As such, it provides a serious deterrent to intruders in the event of an outer perimeter breach.

Water Pumping Site With Stand Alone Electric Fence
We all know that water is a precious commodity. Its security is highly important to both the water utility companies and the population at large who consume it.
On the right is a photograph we took at a water pumping site in Scotland. From here they pump drinking water from Loch Lomond.
The utility company installed our free standing Electro-Fence™ fence system as a high security measure. The fence was sited within the main perimeter and close to the water.
As you can see from the photograph, this rural site had a lot of undulating terrain and forest. However, the stand alone fence installation readily coped with it all.
If you feel that your site could benefit from such security please contact us. We have extensive experience in supplying free standing electric fence systems and are happy to have a no-obligation discussion.
