Here are the most common questions we are asked about our perimeter detection alarm system. They cover the basics of how it works, cabling and fence questions, repairs, protection of gates and climatic conditions. How The Perimeter Alarm Works
Q: What is it?
A: Flexiguard™ is a PIDS deployed microphonic cable system. It has been designed to detect the presence of an intruder attempting to breach a perimeter and then generate an appropriate alarm to the end user.
Q: How does this type of perimeter detection work?
A: Our microphonic cable, created by a proprietary method, is mounted on your perimeter fence using cable ties.
Any disturbance, such as an intruder attempting to climb or attack the fence, generates a small voltage in the cable. The Flexiguard™ analyser detects this induced voltage and, using proprietary filtering techniques, can distinguish between a “cut” type of attack or a “climb” attack. Parameters such as sensitivity and impulse count can be configured by the user.
Q: So how will it tell me when my fence is under attack?
A: Depending on what configuration of Flexiguard™ you choose, it can generate single pole dry relay contact outputs (for either cut or climb scenarios) or it can be connected via RS-485 bus to the APS Multisys™ software suite.

Q: What type of cable do I use to connect the analysers to the control unit?
A: Use twisted pair telephone cable.
Q: How much cabling is required?
A: A single analyser can cover up to 200 metres per fence zone or a dual analyser will cover up to 400 metres (2 zones). Each analyser requires power (18-21 volts), which can be provided by our FS121 power supplies, and signal line, in the form of either to sense relay contact closure or form part of an RS-485 network. Each analyser uses around 40mA current.
Q: Can the sensor cable be joined if cut?
A: Yes. Use the FS-420 joint box to repair the cable.
Q: Can any joint box be used to repair the cable?
A: No. You can only use the FS-420 joint box as this is a special box with an internal graphite coating and conductive gasket used for screening.
Perimeter Fence Questions
Q: What type of fence can be protected?
A: Most types of metal fence including chainlink, weldmesh, palisade and expamet.
Q: What height of fence can be protected with one sensor cable?
A: One sensor cable can protect a fence up to a height of 3 metres (10ft approx).
Q: Can a fence higher than 3 metres be protected?
A: Yes. Use two sensor cables, one near the bottom of the fence and one near the top.
Zones, Power Requirements, Gates, Extreme Climatic Conditions
Q: What is the maximum zone length?
A: 300 metres (984ft approx). This includes any feeder cable.
Q: What are the power requirements for the analyser?
A: The analysers work with a voltage range of 15-21V DC at 25mA.
Q: I need to protect gates in the fence. How can this be done?
A: Gates can be protected by fixing the sensor cable to the gates using FS-460/461 gate loops.
Q: How does the system operate in extreme temperatures?
A: Our security systems can still operate efficiently in unusually cold or high temperatures. Photo shows Flexiguard™ installed on the perimeter of the Great Pyramids of Giza where summer temperatures average 35°C (95°F).
To combat cold temperatures we can make a special adaptation whereby electric heaters are fitted into the enclosures.
To combat high temperatures coolers and sun shields can be fitted. A good example of this is one of our installations perimeter security in the Middle East where Peltier coolers (thermoelectric cooling principal) were fitted.
Warehouse Security & Intrinsic Safety
Q: Can Flexiguard™ be used anywhere else other than on standard perimeter fencing?
A: Yes, we have several, specially designed versions of Flexiguard™. This gives it a much broader spectrum of use. For example:
