Recent statistics show that construction output in the UK is at an all time high. Theft of plant and machinery from construction sites can be costly both in terms of investment and project downtime. So it is vital to have good construction site security to help keep projects on schedule and on budget.
According to a report just two months ago from the Office for National Statistics, the total value of construction output for the UK reached a staggering £14 billion GBP. This is a record since monthly records began back in 2010.
Why Is Construction On The Increase?
The growth in construction is being driven primarily by private, new housing and private, commercial work. As with any growing industry, there is a downside. In the case of construction sites, they face the threat of theft. Sometimes it can be vandalism.
In the case of commercial construction projects, the workforce often have to leave large and expensive items of plant machinery on site. Sometimes it is just overnight. Other times it is for longer periods.
The wide range of items used and stored on construction sites offers rich pickings for machinery thieves. The items vary enormously. They might include such things as portable boxes of valuable tools and surveying equipment, generators and excavators.
What Do Thieves Target On Construction Sites?
According to a recent UK insurance company report, thieves are definitely stealing increasing amounts of construction plant from construction sites. The five most common items stolen in recent claims submitted to the company are tools, surveying equipment, excavators and digging machinery, generators and rollers. Out of these, the most expensive claims will of course relate to the bigger machinery.
This type of plant is often hired in from a plant hire company. However, whether it is hired in or owned by the contractor on site is immaterial. The owner has a big financial investment to protect and the contractor must keep downtime to a minimum. A new, full size excavator can cost anything from £70,000 to £350,000 ($100,000 to $500,000 USD).
The most common type of excavator used on construction sites is in the mid-range. This is a machine of around 15T-20T in weight with a price tag new of £80,000 to £150,000 ($100,000 to $200,000 USD). Even at the lower end of the scale, the theft of a small excavator (10T-15T) is no small amount. New, such a machine costs around £60,000 to £110,000 ($80,000 to $150,000 USD).
The Security Solution
The most common time and place for theft is outside of working hours on construction sites. Usually at night.
So effective construction site perimeter security which offers protection after working hours is more important than ever. Most sites will have some type of security fencing on the perimeter. Even so, many do not have good detection technology incorporated.
Advanced Perimeter Systems Limited has provided perimeter protection for construction sites for a wide variety of contractors. Some of them amongst the most prestigious in their sector, such as the British Ministry Of Defence.
