At any zoo or wildlife park, it is important to have effective security in order to safeguard the protection of both the animals and their visitors. Our Flexiguard™, Electro-Fence™ and Multisys™ systems have all been installed as zoo perimeter security systems. What’s more, they protect a wide range of wildlife from elephants and tigers to parrots!
Zoo Perimeter Security Systems
In the Spring of 2018 Blackpool Zoo unveiled a special new elephant enclosure: Project Elephant Base Camp.
Construction began in 2017 and the zoo asked us to provide key elements of the zoo perimeter security system. This involved the installation of our Electro-Fence™ and Multisys™ technology.
Our Technical Director attended the installation for technical support and advice.
Specialized Electric Fence Design
Our Electro-Fence™ is a specialized type of electric security fence. It brings with it a peace of mind that agricultural electric fencing cannot provide. Working in conjunction with our Multisys™ monitoring system, our electric fence has a premium capacity for fault detection. If there is a breach of the integrity of the perimeter fence such as a drop in voltage or another form of breakdown, then an instant alarm is triggered.
For the elephant keepers at Blackpool Zoo the alarm works in two ways. From their specially built monitoring station the keepers can see a screen alert (generated by the Multisys™ software) as well as hear an audible alarm. A third type of alarm can also be programmed into the system – the sending of an SMS text to a mobile phone. Therefore, in the event of the electric fence being compromised in any way, the keepers can receive immediate notification, enabling them to respond rapidly. This is of paramount importance when it comes to animal containment and safety.

Security For Zoo’s Rare Birds
Edinburgh Zoo approached us for a security solution to safeguard some of their rare birds against theft. The zoo installed our Flexiguard™ intrusion detection system around the perimeter of their parrot cage. The birds were, in fact, rare and valuable parrots. Thieves had previously cut into the cage and stolen some of them.
The solution we provided also had an ‘extra’ built in. This was based on a particular trait of known parrot behaviour – an ability for chewing! Accordingly, we designed a feature to prevent the parrots from sabotaging their own security. Our detection sensor cable was housed within a stainless steel flexible conduit. We knew they could not chew through that!
Wildlife Park & Safari Park Security
Wildlife parks and safari parks also need good perimeter security to protect their animals. Advanced Perimeter Systems Limited is privileged to have helped a number of parks with security systems, specially designed to meet their needs.
Amongst these is a wildlife park in the North East of England which is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Everything from fallow deer to llamas, meerkats to kangaroos and kookaburras to snowy owls! The value of the animals and birds within the park was attracting thieves. However, there were also occasions when people broke through the perimeter fence and let the animals loose just to create havoc.
So the wildlife park required an effective security system. They needed to detect any attempt at forced or illegal entry on the site perimeter. Our Flexiguard™ perimeter detection system was installed on the perimeter fence and has proved to be the ideal solution as a reliable fence alarm.
Security For Knowsley Safari Park Tiger Enclosure
A new ‘Tiger Trail’ was opened at Knowsley Safari Park in 2018 with what is believed to be the largest tiger fence in Europe. The fence comprises 3,360 metres (11,000 ft) of chain link fence with over 220 posts, each of which rises to 6 metres (20ft) above ground. The enclosure’s residents are a group of magnificent and rare Amur tigers, so the safari park had to be sure the perimeter had a high level of security.
It was thanks to the success of our specialised electric fence for the Elephant enclosure at Blackpool Zoo that we were invited to help with the ‘Tiger Trail’. Our Technical Director assessed the requirements and arranged for a member of our Electric Fence Installers Network to visit the safari park. They subsequently installed some of our Electro-Fence™ Dual Zone Multisys Controllers. These control the enclosure’s electric fencing in conjunction with our Multisys™ software. Our Technical Director remained involved throughout to supervise commissioning, programming and training.
